Botswana, Capital Markets in Africa — The Botswana Stock Exchange Equity Markets bear returned leaving the markets unable to sustain the previous days gains as the Domestic Composite Index (DCI), Domestic Financial Sector Index (DFSI) and the Local Asset Sector Index (LASI) all retreated southwards today. Market capitalisation dropped further with price gains made in five stocks and only one price decrease recorded in the listed tradeable securities of the day.
The Botswana Domestic Composite Index (DCI) lost by 29 points or 0.28 percent to close 10,596.52 points from its previous close of 10,626.12 points recorded in the previous session.
Likewise, the Local Asset Sector Index (LASI) was also down after the days trading closing at 792.93 losing 0.28 points from its previous close of 793.21 points, a change of 0.04 percent (LASI is made up of the domestic companies and all foreign companies awarded the local asset status by the Ministry of Finance and development planning).
The Foreign Composite Index (FCI) remained neutral to close 1,562.92 points after the days trading closing 0.00 percent down from its previous close of 1562.92 points.
The Domestic financial Sector index (DFSI) which is composed of all domestic financial sector companies, decreased by 0.51 percent to close on 1232.57 points after the days trading.
The market capitalisation settled at BWP 418,905.39 million with the Domestic Equity BWP accounting for BWP 50,230.84 million and the Foreign Equity Main Board accounting for BWP 368,674.55 million.
From a market activity perspective, the total daily volume settled at 1,972,365 shares traded which were exchanged from the 24,228 million Securities issued bringing the total turnover of those shares traded on the domestic and foreign main boards to BWP 6,138,889.01 million.
Leading the market activity in terms of the traded volumes were Sechaba with 9,977,850.00, Turnstar recording volumes of 7,734,415.13, Sefalana recording volume figures of 4,442,689.24 followed by NAP with 148,340.15.
In terms of price gainers and price losers there was five price gainers and one price loser today leaving market breadth positive, Barclays was up 1 point to close at BWP 434 per share, Chobe was up 1 point to close at BWP 653 per share, Choppies was up 1 point to close at BWP 421 per share, RDP was up 1 point to close at BWP 240 per share and Sefalana was up 1 point to close at BWP 1301 per share.
The price losers were Stanchart was down 2 point to close at BWP 1173 per share.
